Govt plans €350m Piraeus port upgrade

The government will spend 350m euros on building a monorail system and expanding docking capacity for cruise ships at the port of Piraeus, aiming to double tourism traffic by 2016, a minister said on Wednesday

The car/passenger ferry SPEEDRUNNER III remained docked in the port of Piraeus on Tuesday after engine trouble was observed while the vessel was preparing to set sail for the Syros-Tinos-Mykonos route, with 98 passengers on board.
Heavy holiday traffic to and from greater Athens over weekend

A large portion of the greater Athens area's summer holidaymakers apparently returned en masse over the weekend, the second to last in August. Conversely, departures from the main port of Piraeus were also significantly up during the same weekend.
Piraeus shops turnover down during winter sales

The overwhelming majority of shops in Piraeus recorded a drop of at least 40 percent in their turnover during this year's winter sales season due to the crisis, despite substantial discounts, while the use of credit cards has also dropped even further, according to the Association of Piraeus Merchants in a survey of the market movement in the regular winter sales held among a sampling of 150 ships in Piraeus.

 The Piraeus port authority on Monday announced plans to hold an open international tender in order to sell and remove the abandoned passenger/car ferries "Dimitroula", "Anthi-Marina", "Romilda", "Milena", "Marina", "Rodanthi" and "Daliana" from the area of the port.
