The Wolfman
(UK/USA/ Horror/ Thriller/ 125 minutes)
ALTHOUGH Benicio del Toro is a self-confessed Lon Chaney Jr fanatic, there are few similarities between this noisy mess of a remake and George Waggner’s 1941 original. Upon return to his family’s not-so-humble abode, nobleman Lawrence Talbot (del Toro) is bitten by a werewolf while out looking for his missing brother. Full-moon irritations and spontaneous hairiness ensue, followed by the realisation his life is cursed forever more.

Valentine’s Day
(USA/Comedy/Romance/125 minutes)
THIS SORRY pastiche of love is shamelessly directed at those of you who consider Valentine’s Day a real holiday and not just a made-up excuse to purchase lots of furry animals with appropriately preposterous cards that your girlfriends will later throw in the bin or donate to charity. Save your money for a real film and better excuse to buy gifts.

Black Field
(Greece/Drama/104 minutes)
AN INTERESTING play on sexual identity, Black Field is one of the more idiosyncratic Greek releases in the past few years, destined to become a case study for future filmmaking generations to come. Art-directed down to a T, it might have required a bit more soul-searching to go with the gorgeous compositions, but it’s still definitely worth experiencing in large format.

The Princess and the Frog
(USA/Animation/Family/97 minutes)
THE CLASSIC kiss-the-frog tale receives a New Orleans spin with a jazzy twist and lands itself three Oscar nominations, including best animated feature. Probably because there was nothing else around.

The Mountain Ahead
(Greece/Drama/102 minutes)
EASTER festivities resurrect more than just the spirit of Christ in a small rural community. Forgotten racial conflicts are brought back to life, too, proving as difficult to surpass as the mountain ahead.
