Former Irish PM in Athens
FORMER Irish prime minister Garret FitzGerald will visit Athens to mark
St Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s national holiday (see Community Events page for details). FitzGerald, who served as premier from 1981 to 1982 and 1982 to 1987, will speak at a number of engagements on the economic situation, both past and present, in Greece, Ireland and the EU. His first talk will be to students at the Athens University of Economics and Business on March 18 at noon. Later that day, at 6pm, he will address the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in the conference room of the offices of the European Parliament in Athens. On March 19, he will speak at a St Patrick’s Day lunch, organised by the Hellenic Irish Business Association and the Greek Federation of Industries, at the Grand Bretagne Hotel.
Indian food fundraiser
NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation Hara, an Omonia-based group which supports homeless, needy and destitute immigrants in the Greek capital with shelter, food and other assistance, will hold a fundraising dinner on March 12 at 9.30pm. The event, which takes place at the Dhaka Palace restaurant (26 Geraniou St), will feature vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian gourmet food, music and dance. US consul in Chania
A US CONSUL will be in Chania, Crete, on March 15 and 16 to provide consular services for American citizen residents. The consul will take passport applications, provide limited notarial services and answer questions on consular matters. Time permitting, American parents of children born in Greece may also apply for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad for their children. For more information on the consul’s schedule, citizens are advised to call the embassy at 210-720-2494/2464, between 1 and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Calling all Britons
BRITISH subjects living overseas have less than one month to register to vote if they want to ensure that they have their say in the forthcoming UK general elections, anticipated to be held on May 6. It is estimated that there are 2.5 million Britons living overseas who are eligible to vote in the next election. British citizens living overseas may register to vote in the UK if they were on an electoral roll in the UK within the last 15 years.
